There are times when we need to breathe fresh air and observe nature to clear our minds from the daily grind. No matter how many home entertainment options you have, sometimes you just need to disconnect from technology to contemplate the wonders of life.

This leads to more and more people wanting ponds with plants and fishes (in spanish: estanques con plantas y peces) in their home gardens. Observing these types of elements and listening to the sound of the water serves to relax. In addition, as is evident, they provide a bit of beauty and a natural balance.

The best thing about them is that they can be done without the need for a major investment, since they are simpler than they seem, including their maintenance. In this article you will learn step by step how to keep plants and pond fish (in spanish: plantas y peces de estanque).

How to install a pond

Before starting the work, it is important that all the details are planned, so that the installation of the pond (construir un estanque) is successful, and generates a harmonious result and in balance with the rest that is present in the garden. It is also very important that it lasts over time.

The first step is to choose correctly the location, since it cannot be done in an improvised and random way. For example, water plants and flowers need about four to six hours of sunshine a day, so they can flower. This means that it must be a space that guarantees both light and shade.

It is not recommended to place pond plants and fish near trees. Trees can offer too much shade, and if a leaf drop occurs, the water will become dirty, and with it the presence of algae will increase.

What you should do is to be near an electrical outlet, so that the pump has the necessary current to function properly.

Then it is time to prepare the hole for the pond. Once the size has been chosen, it must be drawn in the garden to have clear dimensions, and start digging from the center outwards.

In this way, the central part will have more depth. As you get closer to the sides, it is necessary to make a step of the land.

With the hole ready, remove the stones and smooth the ground before covering the surface with sand. Then, a protective filter should be placed, so that it reinforces the sand as an insulator of any element that could break the canvas.

Then, install the tarpaulin. The most advisable thing is that it guarantees resistance against the cold and the sun, and that it is free of any element harmful to plants and pond fish (peces de estanque).

Decoration

Once the surface of the pond is prepared, it is necessary to fix its edges to prevent the canvas from moving. To do this, a small profile should be dug around the perimeter of the pond, and the tarp should be covered with soil, so that it stays firm under the weight.

Then it is time to install the pump, taking into account the capacity and dimensions of the pond, so that it is completely useful.

The next thing to have the pond plants and fish is to beautify the structure. This means the decorative linings, such as the stones on the banks and bottoms. Before adding the fish, it is important that a time of acclimatization is left so that the water and all the living elements that will be part of it find their balance.

Pond fishes

When dealing specifically with a fish pond, it is important to avoid overflowing the water. This can be prevented by using grids that ensure that the water drains away when it rains.

In addition, the drainage will have to be at the bottom of the tank, and provided with a sink or an anti-vortex grate, since, if it is not available, the fish can be sucked out.

It is also recommended that the fish pond be at least one meter deep, and that a sand filter be installed.

Of course, the pond should have a filtration system, so that the fish have the best possible water quality. The best solution for this is to install a UV water clarifier.
