Course Syllabus


Welcome to Canvas!

PURPOSE - This course has been developed to introduce faculty and staff to the new institutional learning management system, CANVAS. Upon completion of this course, faculty and staff should be able to master the major tools and features available in CANVAS in order to be assigned either an INSTRUCTOR (faculty) or Teaching Assistant/TA (staff) role in Canvas.

This course contains 10 modules, each containing objectives, videos, checklists, and perhaps a small self-test or activity. It should take about 1 hour to review the entire course. 

INSTRUCTOR or TEACHING ASSISTANT (TA) TRAINING - If a faculty or staff member wants to have an INSTRUCTOR or TA role in any CANVAS course, they should review this course and then successfully pass a 20 question exam offered on the UT Health Science Center's employee training site called Knowledge Center.  To access the exam:

  1. go to
  2. enter your domain credentials (same as the user name and password you use to access your email). 
  3. click on the + sign to the left of Academics.
  4. Locate the course entitled: Canvas Proficiency Quiz 
  5. Click LAUNCH
  6. Take the 20 question Mastery Exam. If you don't pass the exam, just retake the exam till you pass it.  

ACCESS TO INSTRUCTOR/TA ROLES - Within 24 hours of completing this exam the institutional PeopleSoft Campus Solutions System that enrolls faculty and students into courses will be updated. Then your department administrator will be able to add you as an INSTRUCTOR or a TA into any CANVAS course.  


Go to the top of this page (User Dashboard), click on the arrow next to COURSES and view your courses.

If you have questions about CANVAS, please first access the CANVAS GUIDES located in the HELP corner (upper right corner) of each page in CANVAS. These guides are quite helpful.

We have also included a CHECKLIST that you can use to review your course 


You can either scroll down to review the short (less than 5 minute) video tutorials from this page, OR go to the left navigation sidebar, click on MODULES and sequentially review the course content. Remember, if you want an INSTRUCTOR or TA Role in a CANVAS course, you must link to Knowledge Center and take the Exam.
